Launch of Watergate Strategic Vision 2025 - 2029
Culture Night 2025 at the Watergate Theatre was a vibrant celebration of creativity, community, and ambition, marking the launch of the Theatre’s new Strategic Plan for 2025-2029.
The evening brought together artists, audiences, and supporters from across Kilkenny, all united by a shared passion for the arts and a commitment to the future of this much-loved cultural landmark.
The heart of the night belonged to the artists. Asylum Productions, Watergate’s Artists in Residence from 2023-2025, delivered a captivating presentation that reflected their unique approach to theatre-making—one that brings performance out into the community, transforming unexpected spaces and inviting new audiences to engage with the arts. A particular highlight was Muireann Ryan’s chilling and captivating performance of the monologue of the great Kilkenny character Alice Kytler, produced as part of the Alice Project by Asylum Theatre. Her portrayal brought history to life and left a lasting impression on all in attendance, underscoring the power of live performance to connect us with our shared heritage.
The evening soared with the sublime harmonies of Alchemy VOX, under the direction of the extraordinary Christine Scarry. Their uplifting performance filled the theatre with energy and hope, embodying the spirit of GROWTH that is central to the Watergate’s new plan. Alchemy VOX’s deep connection to the Watergate—on stage, behind the scenes, and in the community—demonstrates the essential role artists play in shaping the theatre’s identity and future.
The Strategic Plan’s three priorities—SPACE, INCLUSION, and GROWTH—were brought to life through these performances. The plan envisions a Watergate that
is physically accessible and welcoming, a true home for cultural experiences (SPACE); a theatre that reaches out, connects, and reflects the diversity of Kilkenny (INCLUSION); and an institution that nurtures talent, expands its reach, and continues to evolve (GROWTH).
Culture Night 2025 was a powerful reminder that artists are at the heart of the Watergate’s mission. Their creativity, vision, and courage will continue to drive the theatre forward, ensuring it remains a beacon of inspiration and connection for generations to come.
