The Watergate Theatre is excited to announce an open call for our 2026–2028 Artist Residency Programme.

We invite artists and creative teams from all disciplines based in Kilkenny —performance, theatre, dance, music, and interdisciplinary practice—to apply for a residency that supports the development of new work, fosters creative exploration, and connects with our vibrant Kilkenny community.

About the Residency

Our residencies are designed to provide time, space, and resources for artists to experiment, collaborate, and create. Previous residencies have included support for:

  • Development of new work in progress
  • Community Engagement - focusing on participatory practice
  • Production - supporting rehearsal and presentation

Who Should Apply

We welcome applications from individual artists, collectives, and companies working in any performing art form. Applicants must be based in Kilkenny. We particularly encourage proposals that:

  • Align with the Watergate’s strategic priorities: artistic excellence, community engagement, inclusivity, and innovation within the core pillars of SPACE GROWTH INCLUSION
  • Propose new ways to engage with audiences and the wider community
  • Reflect the cultural diversity of Kilkenny and Ireland
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development, collaboration, and open dialogue

How to Apply

Please send a folder/zip file enclosing the following with your application:

  1. A proposal (max 2 pages) outlining your project, your artistic practice, and how a residency at the Watergate would benefit your work.
  2. A CV or biography for each artist involved.
  3. Links to examples of previous work (if available).
  4. Any access or support requirements.
